St Petersburg AC Repair

Have you experienced waking up in the middle of the night all sweaty and realized that your air conditioning unit is blowing nothing but hot air, or worse, has stopped working at all? With the year round heat that we experience in Florida, the AC has become the most essential appliance in your home. This is why it is very important to keep your AC properly maintained and routinely serviced by a reputable AC repair company in St. Petersburg.

So what are the most common problems with air conditioners that you should know about?

Low Refrigerant Levels

The refrigerant is an important component of your air conditioning unit as it is the chemical compound that allows the absorption of hot air from the environment and makes it possible to be transformed into cool, comfortable air.

The most commonly used refrigerants in the industry today are Freon (R22) and Puron (R410A), with the former supposed to be totally phased out by the year 2020 as the latter is more environmentally friendly. These chemical compounds were designed to stay inside your AC – so if the refrigerant level goes low, it can only mean that there is a leak somewhere within the system.

Here are some common signs of that your AC is low in refrigerant:

  • AC blows warm air or the temperature is not as cool as it is supposed to be
  • Increased costs on electricity bills due to the AC having to work harder to compensate for the lack of refrigerant
  • Unusual noises in the compressor
  • The copper lines and coil is frozen solid

If the possibility of refrigerant leak has been established, it is very important to get in touch immediately with a professional HVAC service provider so that the origin of the leak can be identified and properly fixed. Exposure to these chemical compounds can be a health hazard and therefore must not be taken for granted.

Frozen Evaporator Coils

The evaporator is one of the key components of an air conditioning system and it is responsible for working alongside the refrigerant in order to absorb heat inside a room. Together with the condenser coil, it works through a heat exchange process that allows cool air to be blown inside the room.

When AC units are not regularly cleaned and maintained, all sorts of dirt and particle buildup can occur and cause problems with the heat exchange cycle. Should the circulation of air from within the evaporator coils be blocked, there is a possibility that ice can form and eventually prevent your AC from providing cool air or cause it to stop working completely. If you notice that the evaporator coils are frozen and your AC has some trouble running, turn the unit off immediately and get in touch with a reliable HVAC company to help you fix the problem.

Dirt Buildup on Condenser Coils

The condenser coils are housed on the outside part of the air conditioning unit and is responsible for getting the warm air collected from inside the room to be blown outside. After the refrigerant has collected warm air from the evaporator coils, it then has to go through the condenser coils, in which a fan blows on it and cools down the refrigerant before it is sent back inside.

Since the condenser coils are situated outside, it is very much exposed to dust and all sorts of debris, especially if your AC unit is near the highway or a very dusty area. When too much dirt and debris accumulates on your condenser coils, it will have a harder time performing its job, thereby causing significant reduction in your AC’s cooling performance. It can also unnecessarily increase the wear and tear on your AC as well.

It is also important to make sure that your condenser unit is free from any obstructions such as trees, plants, or anything that might block the airflow on your air conditioning unit.

Regular cleaning and maintenance of your AC unit by a reputable AC Repair company in St. Petersburg can help keep it in top shape and ensure that your home is kept cool and comfortable even on the hottest Floridian summer months.

Compressor Problems

The whole concept of air conditioning revolves around movement of the refrigerant as it goes through the process of heat exchange, and it is the compressor that propels the refrigerant throughout the AC unit. Think of it as the heart of your cooling system.

The compressor is among the hardest working parts of your AC unit and will eventually wear out after a certain period of time. If the compressor stops working, the movement of the refrigerant is hampered, significantly affecting its cooling capabilities and one of the most common symptoms you will notice is that your AC blows warm air inside the room.

A failing compressor can also be detected if the outside unit stops blowing warm air. With a faulty compressor, the AC unit is not able to expel the warm air it has accumulated, thereby rendering the heat exchange cycle incomplete. It is also possible to hear some unusual or strange noises coming from the outdoor unit if the compressor is having a difficult time or in the verge of becoming worn out.

Signs that your compressor has problems include:

  • Tripping of circuit breaker
  • AC is not cooling
  • Leaks near the outdoor unit
  • Sudden increase in electricity costs

While the compressor is subject to normal wear and tear, costly repairs or replacements can almost always be prevented with regular cleaning and maintenance of your air conditioning unit by a qualified professional HVAC company.

If you ever have experienced a time when there is no air coming out from the vents of your air conditioning unit, it is very likely that the fan motor is experiencing some problems.

With a faulty fan motor, there is nothing to circulate the cool air produced by your AC, so its like it is not working at all. When this happens, it would be a good idea to call an AC repair company to have it repaired or replaced. Fan motors are subject to a lot of wear and tear and is one of the most common parts replaced on an AC unit.

Filthy Air Filters

Since the process of air conditioning involves a continuous cycle of air circulation, it is inevitable that it will accumulate significant amounts of dust, dirt, and other foreign particles. This is why AC units come with an air filter that helps to keep the process of air circulation free from as much contaminants as possible.

With all these particles building up on your air filter, it is very important that it gets replaced every month. A dirty filter can significantly affect the cooling performance of your AC and can also lead to all sorts of problems. It also causes your AC to work harder, thereby making it consume more electricity and that means higher costs for you. In addition, homes that have pets such as dogs and cats will also tend to accumulate fur in the air filter, restricting or clogging up airflow throughout the AC unit. Installing a UV light can help to prevent worsening air quality.  AC manufacturers will often have some recommendations as to how much time it will take before the air filters are to be replaced.

Water Leaking From Indoor Unit

If water is leaking somewhere on the lower part of your AC’s indoor unit, it is likely because its drainage system has been clogged up with a variety of stuff such as mold, mildew, dust, dirt, and other contaminants, which ultimately accumulates into a jelly-like substance that clogs its water drainage system. This in turn causes water to flow back and leak into the indoor unit instead of getting drained to the outdoor unit.

If water is leaking from your air conditioning unit, this is usually a sign that you may have overlooked the routine cleaning and maintenance of your AC, which should ideally be performed by a qualified AC repair company. For a temporary fix, flush the drain line a best as you can to prevent water from overflowing again.

TIP: Install a Float Switch, this device will prevent water from overflowing by turning off the AC once the water starts rising.
